Description:
Introduction to the mechanics of rigid bodies; linear and rotational motion of the bodies and the forces operating on them; gravitation and collisions; waves in elastic media; interference, diffraction, polarisation.

Assessment is by examination only. However, students have to complete the required assignments though no marks are awarded for these, to be eligible to appear in the final examination.

Media and methods employed: Printed text, radio broadcasts, face-to-face tutorials, audio cassettes, video cassettes.
Printed correspondence texts prepared by/for institution, audio cassettes, video cassettes, radio, face-to-face tutoring (contact programme), textbooks, practical training in laboratories.

Administrative information:
On average students will require each week: 12-16 hours of study of the printed materials, 30 minutes for radio broadcasts and at least 2-3 hours for audio/video programmes at Study Centres.
